Competing for Waldo Cup at Head of the Bay Club

As Larchmont Yacht Club hosted its Area B and C Opti Day, Head of the Bay Club hosted its Area A Waldo Cup on July 16 in Huntington, New York, a regatta which has been held in years previously.

This year, 73 sailors began racing around 11:45 am. Although wind came from the North at 12 miles per hour on average during the day, it died in the afternoon, ranging between one and nine mph. Race Committee ran two races.

Overall, Elisia Gallo (Seawanahaka Corinthian Yacht Club) won first, Catherine Barry (SEAW) won second, Zachary Klusky (Sea Cliff Yacht Club) won third, Lucas Woodworth (Cold Spring Harbor Beach Club) won fourth and Nathaniel Arad (SCYC) won fifth.

In Red Fleet, Hallie Simkins (Centerport Yacht Club) won first, Jake McKenna (CYC) won second, John Grygiel (Port Washington Yacht Club) won third, Emma Glenn (SEAW) won fourth and Sterling Thompson (Northport Yacht Club) won fifth.

In Blue Fleet, Nathaniel Arad (SCYC) won first, Shayne Bersin (PWYC) won second, Caleb Neugebauer (SCYC) won third, Galen Deane (CSH) won fourth and Harry Thompson (Manhassat Bay Yacht Club) won fifth.

Finally, in White Fleet, Elisia Gallo (SEAW) won first, Catherine Barry (SEAW) won second, Zachary Klusky (SCYC) won third, Lucas Woodworth (CSH) won fourth and Tyler Curto (SCYC) won fifth.

Dodging Storms at Larchmont Junior Race Week

Larchmont Junior Race Week takes place for Laser, Laser Radial, Club 420, Pixel and Blue Jay classes. This year is Larchmont Yacht Club's 117th Race Week and 89th annual junior regatta. The competitive event is part of the summer series that determines winners of the JSA of LIS High Point Season Trophies.

At Larchmont Yacht Club, over 400 junior sailors and instructors came from across Long Island Sound to compete on Monday through Wednesday, July 13 to 15. Larchmont Yacht Club provided housing for competitors who came from widespread East Coast areas. Excitement arose for three days of racing and for Larchmont Junior Race Week Dance.

Competitors brought their boats beginning at 5 pm on Sunday, July 12 and in full force on Monday morning around 9 am. They launched their boats from trailers and dollies onto the water using a hoist.

The Skippers’ Meeting followed registration and rigging, and the race committee chairman discussed details from racing instructions, including racecourse mark colors for each fleet. Sailors continued rigging and waited for wind to fill, when the race committee announced harbor start.

Monday started out with lighter winds, which averaged at three miles per hour and reached a maximum of ten mph in the afternoon. Temperature averaged at 74 degrees Farenheit. The 37-boat Pixel fleet finished four races, while 79 Laser Radials and the 113-boat 420 fleet finished two races, and 15 Laser Standards finished three races.

Tuesday, wind stayed light at three mph, with gusts up to 16 mph after noontime. Pixels, 420s, Laser Radials and Laser Standards all finished one race. After, sailors returned safely before rain and thunderstorms began. That evening, Larchmont Junior Race Week Dance took place at LYC’s Pandemonium.

Wednesday, sailing did not happen, due to weather conditions. Sailors left the harbor and came in at the first sign of thunderstorms. Following, they received complimentary ice cream treats and a barbeque, including hot dogs. Junior officers led the awards ceremony in early afternoon.

Noroton Girls Clinic and Regatta

Girl's Optimist Clinic and Regatta  took place at Noroton Yacht Club for its tenth year on Sunday, July 12 and Monday, July 13, respectively.

The all-girl clinic featured all-women coaches, not including junior program instructors for varied Opti ages and skill levels. Noroton’s clinic divided sailors into groups based on experience and gave specific coaching to White Fleet sailors.

The clinic included clubhouse chalk talks and on-water sessions with focus on rigging, racing tactics and boat handling. 48 Optimist sailors raced in the Regatta, which does not count as a qualifier for JSA Optimist Champs.

Riverside Yacht Club Optimist Invitational

On Saturday, July 11, Riverside Yacht Club hosted its Annual Optimist Regatta. 77 sailors representing eight yacht clubs in New York and Connecticut participated.

Harbor start began at 10:20 am with about 5 to 7 knots of breeze out of the north. Once sailors left the harbor, winds came at 5 to 7 knots from the south and stayed there for the rest of the day.

The race committee delivered five Red Fleet, four Blue Fleet and three White Fleet races, before concluding racing at 2:45 PM with sailors returning safely.

RYC presented awards to top five finishers in each fleet. Junior Officers Jake Schinto, Peter Dunay, Taylor Schinto and Chris Lukens helped former Commodore Spike Richey present awards.

Michelle Lahrkamp of American Yacht Club won Red Fleet first place, Charles Roseberry of Larchmont Yacht Club second, Jaume Pujadas of LYC third, Lise Powers of AYC fourth and Audrey Fung of AYC fifth.

Leyton Borcherding of Belle Haven won Blue Fleet first place, Benjamin Schinto of RYC second, Vanessa Lahrkamp of AYC third, Jacqueline Quirke of AYC fourth, and Katherine McNamara of AYC fifth.

Wyatt Bischoff of LYC won White Fleet first place, Asher Beck of RYC second, Benjamin Sheppard of RYC third, Clark Morris of Larchmont Shore Club fourth and Frederik Parkin of RYC fifth.

Samantha Mosconi of AYC won the sportsmanship award.

Of fifteen prizes, AYC sailors won six, RYC four, LYC three, and Larchmont Shore Club and Belle Haven sailors each won one prize.

Vineyard Vines, The Dinghy Locker, The Boat Locker and Chilly Bear donated items that race participants won in the regatta raffle.

American Yacht Club hosts JSA Girls' Champs

JSA of LIS Girls' Champs is an open championship event for the Founders Trophy. Junior women ages 13 to 18 sail in Laser Radials.

Six sailors competed in Rye, NY at American Yacht Club on Saturday, June 11. Of these boats, five came from AYC and one came from Pequot Yacht Club. The Race Committee, including Principal Race Officer Sheila Cameron and last year’s Sailor of the Month Carolyn Russell held six races.

Wind averaged six miles per hour from Northwest and reached a maximum at ten mph. Temperature stayed around 80 degrees Farenheit the duration of the races.

Megan Ploch won first in all races and the Founders Trophy. Lindsay Powers won second in all races and Jane Reynolds won third in all races. Top place winners sail from AYC.

The Opti Rumble took place hosted at Pequot Yacht Club as qualifying event for Area C Optimist sailors on Saturday, July 11.

Racing at Sears Cup

Sonars raced in Sears Cup Area B Qualifier for the YRALIS region at The WaterFront Center. The regatta serves as a qualifier for Triplehanded National Championships. Six teams raced on Friday, July 10.

Winds blew at eight miles per hour from Northwest, with a maximum at 20 mph and max gust at 28 mph.

The American Yacht Club team won first place and the Sears Cup, the Cedar Point Yacht Club team won second and the Centerport Yacht Club team won third.

Wind blows at Western Districts

Western District Regatta, open to sailors who represent JSA member clubs in New York State serves as a qualifier for JSA Championships in C420, Laser, Laser Radial and Pixel classes.

This year’s Western Districts, held at Sea Cliff Yacht Club brought East winds averaging nine miles per hour and gusting up to 20 mph. This wind speed represents a high, compared with previous years.

158 sailors came to compete, including 30 C420s, 46 Radials, six Lasers and 23 Pixels. Race Committee ran three races for all four classes. C420s and Lasers divided from Radials and Pixels, as two Race Committee boats held races on separate courses.

In C420s, Michael Benacerraf and Daniel Reich (Shelter Island Yacht Club) won first, Gabriella DelBello and Madelyn Ploch (American Yacht Club) won second and Stefan Brechter and Charles Bresnahan (SIYC) won third.

In Radials, Nicholas Chisari (SCLF) won first, John Patrick Panarella (SIYC) won second and Matthew Priebe (Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club) won third. In Lasers, Hector McKemey (AYC) won first, Gavin Anderson (Centerport Yacht Club) won second and Richard O’Leary (AYC) won third.

In Pixels, Amelia Jessop & Clara Kruijtzer won first, Nicholas Jessop & Timothy Stoker won second and Alexander Morgan & Kyle Raker won third. All three boats came from AYC.

McIntyre boasts exciting team racing

The McIntyre Team Race event was once again held at SUNY Maritime in a provided fleet of 18 Zim 420’s. Coaches Brian Clancy (Cornell University), John Pearce (George Washington University) and Chris Klevan (US Coast Guard Academy) led the event with support from local coaches Will Holz, Alec Taylor, Beka Schiff, JJ Monro, Brendan Shanahan and Alex Curtiss.

 

Brian, John and Chris were in unanimous agreement that this was the best in the three years they had participated in the event. It was a lot of fun.

Monday began with a clinic session focusing on passback drills on the water, followed by debrief over lunch. The first round robin was completed in a SW breeze ranging from 6 to 12 mph. AYC came out strong and led after day one.

Tuesday began similarly with great breeze all day, right from the start. The clinic session focused on execution at mark three and team racing in current. Again, local coaches gave support in facilitating the drills and debrief at lunch. Round two brought another SW breeze ranging from 12 to 15mph.

Wednesday, the final day called for less than ideal sailing conditions and the plan was to start the third round right away taking knowledge and discussion from the previous two days into account. It was a light Westerly about 5 to 8 mph and was dying. Once current kicked into full ebb, it became quite difficult to navigate the racecourse. Sailors and coaches headed in for an earlier lunch break after completing 17 of 21 anticipated races (81%).

Breeze never materialized from that point forward and teams were unable to head back out to complete the round. However, the team racing appendix allows for incomplete rounds to be counted so long as 80% was completed.

Noroton and AYC tied for the lead with a 13 to 4 win-to-loss record. Noroton won two of three head to head meetings and took the championship. Riverside was not far behind and after a slow start (3 to 3), managed to finish the event with a 9 to 1 record and overall record of 12 to 5, just behind the leaders.

Racing was challenging but it was clear that competitors enjoyed team racing against their JSA rivals. New teams joined in on the action this year. One can only hope that more will follow suit next year. Big thanks to SUNY Maritime and Rob Crafa for hosting for three days and providing motor boats and marks.

SIYC Open Optimist Invitational Regatta

Shelter Island Yacht Club Open Optimist Area A Invitational is a qualifying event for 2015 JSA Optimist Champs. 104 Optis competed, including 35 in white fleet, 53 in blue fleet and 16 in red fleet on July 8. Wind blew from Southwest at 14 miles per hour and Race Committee held four races for all three fleets.

Victoria Chisari (Sea Cliff Yacht Club) won first, William Priebe (Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club) won second and Francesca Edmands (Old Cove Yacht Club) won third in Red Fleet.

Francesca Edmands (OCYC) won first, Charlotte Keil (OCYC) won second and Alexander Patti (Orient Yacht Club) won third in Blue Fleet. Zachary Klusky (SCYC) won first, Elisia Gallo (SEAW) won second and Kate Barry (SEAW) won third in White Fleet.
