Annually the JSA of LIS awards several special trophies that celebrate people who are strong role models among the sailors and instructors at JSA member junior sailing programs.
The JSA special awards for the 2014 season (Brooke Gonzalez, Susie Trotman and Mitchell Weeks trophies) will be presented at the JSA Spring Meeting, June 1 at Larchmont YC. The nomination period for these trophies is open through May 5.
Please submit nominations from your JSA member junior sailing program using the forms on the JSA website.
Here are some nominating tips for the JSA special awards:
- Ask yourself, "Who stands out in my mind from 2014 in these categories?”
Sportsmanlike sailing (Weeks ), or
Outstanding sailing instruction (Trotman), or
Young woman dedicated to the sport of sailing, with outstanding sailing achievements (Gonzalez)
Does a name quickly pop up? Jot it down!
Think again for another deserving sailor in a different category.
- You may review your club’s junior program awards list from 2014 for possible nominees. If you're new in your program position, perhaps your predecessor from last year recalls a good candidate.
- Keep in mind your nominee’s behavior over the entire season, not just a single regatta or situation.
- Write a letter describing why your nominee deserves to be considered. One or two pages are sufficient, plus the JSA nomination form as a cover sheet. Optional supporting statements from instructors, parents and sailors may be included.
Please include specific examples of behavior showing how your nominee meets the criteria for each special award, as described here:
BROOKE E. GONZALEZ MEMORIAL TROPHY
This trophy is awarded to a young woman who demonstrates sportsmanship, exceptional ethical behavior and dedication to the sport of sailing, and outstanding sailing achievement. Nominations may come from sailors, parents and club junior program instructors/leaders. The 2013 winner was Haley Kachmar of Milford YC.
SUSIE TROTMAN TROPHY
This trophy is awarded to the instructor who demonstrates outstanding sailing instruction. Nominations may come from sailors, parents and club junior program instructors/leaders. The 2013 co-winners were Laura Wefer of Manhasset Bay YC and Bryan Stephan of Pequot YC.
MITCHELL S. WEEKS TROPHY
This trophy is presented on behalf of the New York Yacht Club to promote awareness that the true benefits of sport come from the integrity, courage, and fairness with which the game is played. It’s awarded to the JSA sailors who are respected for exceptional sportsmanship in the Club 420, Laser and Laser Radial classes. These sailors always use good clean racing and skill, no matter if it’s win, lose or draw, and you’re left thinking they are good people to race against. Nominations may come from sailors, parents and club junior program instructors/leaders.
Please use the form on the JSA website as a cover page for each nomination sent to the JSA office by May 5.
