As the summer sailing season wraps up, there are opportunities for sailors who did not qualify for championships to compete in one final JSA regatta. These events are known as the Alternate regattas.
There were two alternate regattas this year: an Optimist event at the WaterFront Center in Oyster Bay, NY; and a Laser Radial/C420 event at Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club in Center Island, NY. Both were held last Thursday, and each one attracted about 20 boats.
At the Opti regatta, sailors had a great day full of quality sailing. According to Dave Waldo, Executive Director at the WaterFront Center, the regatta “had ideal conditions with just enough breeze to get kids sitting on the rail without being over-powering.” In total, there were four races in each fleet. At the end of the day, sailors derigged and enjoyed an ice cream social with their fellow sailors and coaches.
At the Laser Radial/C420 regatta, conditions were very similar to those at the WaterFront Center, as the two clubs are very near each other. Carter Shields, a Laser Radial sailor from Manhasset Bay Yacht Club, described the wind on Thursday as “shifty when the day began, but pretty steady by the middle of the first race.” In total, there were six races in each division.
At both events, sailors enjoyed the opportunity to spend a final day on the water racing, and praised the phenomenal conditions that were present throughout the day. Moreover, with a thunderstorm forecasted, sailors truly lucked out and the storm never materialized.
