Blue Jay/Pixel race week started off slow but finished with a bang on the final day completing 4 races of the 7 race series.
Because of the high number of Pixel entries (46) the class was divided into 3 fleets: The Blue Fleet and Red Fleet were open to Pixel sailors of any skill level, and we saw JSA's first Pixel Novice fleet at Pequot as well. The only restriction to the Novice flight was that the junior sailors had to be under the age of 13 and have limited racing experience. This is a great opportunity for those junior sailors who never really got into the Opti racing scene or started their sailing careers a bit later than their peers. It offers a fair course (from an excellent Race Committee of course!) and a ton of fun, as well as an excellent learning opportunity.
Centerport YC swept the Blue Jay course this year.Lilyana Ohlenschlaeger and Robert Zagaja alternated skippering
responsibilities to lead the division. Austin Coneys and Matthew Gardner
finished second, only one point behind, while Cameron Coneys and Alexander
Kazerouni finished third. Top 3 in one club ain't bad!
For many years, the Pequot Invitational has served as a
“rite of passage” as it represents their first “away” regatta. Local families
provided housing for Long Island and Westchester sailors. On Monday night after
dinner a DJ got the sailors going on the parking lot dance floor, a welcome
respite from the heat of the afternoon sailing.
